Sadda Haq ban: making a mockery of the CBFC

Sadda Haq ban: making a mockery of the CBFC

Punjabi film Sadda Haq is a cinematic look at the separatist movement in the state from the militants’ point of view and is purportedly based on true events

First of all, let us clarify that we are not referring to the AR Rahman’s hit song from Rockstar. That’s so 2011. We are talking about Mandeep Benipal’s Punjabi film Sadda Haq that was due to release last Friday but was banned at the last minute by the governments of Punjab, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir and Delhi on the grounds that it might fan the flames of communal disharmony. This is Benipal’s second film after 2010’s superhit Ekam: Son of Soil. Sadda Haq is a cinematic look at the separatist movement in the Punjab from the militants’ point of view and is purportedly based on true events. Click here to read more

Arjun Kapoor’s Aurangzeb – a welter of inspirations?

Arjun Kapoor’s Aurangzeb – a welter of inspirations?
Yash Raj Films

Cineswami reveals what could possibly be the films that Yash Raj Films’ latest movie is based upon

Picture this. A dreaded crime lord runs an empire of illegal businesses. The police have no evidence against him. One of the crime lord’s flashier minions has a lookalike. The cops abduct the minion and the lookalike substituted in his place. Sounds eerily similar to what you’ve seen in the just released trailer for Yash Raj Films’ Aurangzeb? You’re right of course, but like success, Aurangzeb has many parents. Click here to read more

Himmatwala: The April Fool joke is on the audience

Himmatwala: The April Fool joke is on the audience

Cineswami wonders who watched Himmatwala in theatres to give it the Rs 31 crore weekend box office collection

It’s All Fool’s Day today, the first of April. The hoary tradition is to play a silly prank on someone and declare him or her an April Fool. We had always thought that Sajid Khan was a prime April candidate for the august title ‘Fool khile hain Gulshan Grover’. However, the great mind behind Heyy Babyy, Housefull and Housefull 2 has proved that he’s no Bad Man, let alone a fool. Click here to read more

Sanjay Dutt jail sentence: Rakhee Gulzar to Rakhi Sawant – from the sublime to the ridiculous!
Yogen Shah

Veteran actor Rakhee Gulzar and item girl Rakhi Sawant have both spoken on Sanjay Dutt’s five-year jail term – and their individual statements reveal opposing views on the court verdict

While it was indeed heartrending to see Sanjay Dutt break down on live international television, it is also worthwhile to bear in mind that nobody is above the pale of law. Amidst the televised tears, two women have added their statements to the issue – one a dignified legend of Indian cinema and the other, legendary for her constant pursuit of fame, losing any shred of dignity she had in the process. Let us begin with Rakhee Gulzar. This is what she had to say Click here to read more

Sanjay Dutt sentencing: Is it Salman Khan’s turn next?

Sanjay Dutt sentencing: Is it Salman Khan’s turn next?
Yogen Shah

Cineswami wonders why Indians, including Superstar Rajinikanth, are sympathising with Sanjay Dutt over his imprisonment in the 1993 bomb blasts case. And is Salman Khan going to jail, too?

There is an extraordinary outpouring of love and support for Sanjay Dutt after his recent sentencing. It is only understandable that Bollywood rallies together for one of her own, and even more so, given that there is around Rs 250 crore riding on his unfinished projects. What is not so understandable is that we, the great Indian public, are also clamouring for the fallen star’s release Click here to read more

60th National Awards reflect resurgence of Bollywood

60th National Awards reflect resurgence of Bollywood
Yogen Shah

Irrfan Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Parineeti Chopra took home the coveted award this year

It happens only in India. Surely, a film chosen as the best in the country should be the one sent to compete at the Oscars. But no, Barfi!, rather than Paan Singh Tomar, was sent and duly failed to secure a nomination. Click here to read more

Priyanka Chopra’s Babli Badmaash item song – a sad comedown for Sanjay Gupta

Priyanka Chopra’s Babli Badmaash item song – a sad comedown for Sanjay Gupta

Cineswami takes a look at the various item numbers from Sanjay Gupta’s films and thinks that Babli Badmaash is nowhere close to them in terms of entertainment

There was a time when Sanjay Gupta could do no wrong. He looked at the existing methods of shooting songs, ripped apart the rulebook, threw it away, spat on his hands and set about reinventing with gusto. We’re, of course, referring to Kaante and specifically the songs Maahi ve and Ishq samundar. The way Gupta and his team interpreted it, the visuals were slick, sensual, classy and blew whatever little competition there was out of the water. Click here to read more
