Born on May 2, 1921, in Calcutta, Satyajit Ray was one of India’s precious gifts to world cinema. The prolific filmmaker, who received an honorary Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement almost on his deathbed in 1992, inspired many acclaimed international directors like Martin Scorsese, Danny Boyle, Mira Nair and Shyam Benegal to name a few. Japanese cinema great Akira Kurosawa praised Ray’s work.
