Biography: This veteran Telegu actor had a career spanning over 75 years and is considered one of the most iconic figures in Telegu cinema. His debut was at the age of 17 in Dharmapatni. Since it was not permissible for women to act on stage, he played female roles as well. Nageswar Rao is most remembered for playing mythological roles in movies such as Maya Bazaar, Chenchu Lakshmi, Bhookailash and Sri Krishnarjuna Yuddham. He excelled in the films that were set against a rural backdrop and became the superstar of Telegu cinema. Some such movies were Balaraju, Rojulu Maraayi and Namminabantu. He even played the comic role with great skill in Missamma, Chakrapani and Preminchi Choodu. His performance in romantic dramas such Laila Majnu, Anarkali, Batasari, Devadasu, Prem Nagar, Premabhishekam and Meghasandesham made him the ‘Tragedy King’. Throughout his career he played a variety of roles with great dexterity. Some of his other successful movies include Samsaram, Bratuku Teruvu, Aradhana, Donga Ramudu, Dr. Chakravarthi, Ardhaangi, Mangalya Balam, Illarikam, Shantinivasam, Velugu Needalu, Dasara Bullodu, Bharya Bhartalu, Dharmadata, Batasari, College Bullodu and Sitaramayyagari Manavaralu. His last movie was Manam. Nageswar Rao’s greatest contribution to Telegu cinema is that he was instrumental in shifting the base of Telegu cinema from Chennai to Hyderabad. He is the recipient of Dada Saheb Phalke Award and Padma Vibushan.
