Biography: Ramaswamy Ganesan along with M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan are the three superstars of Tamil cinema. The Kadhal Mannan (King of Romance) of Tamil cinema has worked in a number of movies in his film career spanning across 50 years. His film debut was in Miss Malini (1947) in which he was offered a minor role. His second movie did not do much for his career. It was his negative role in the movie Thai Ullam in 1953 that brought him recognition. After playing the lead role in Manam Pola Mangalyam (1954), he arrived as a star. Some of his other movies include Maya Bazaar (1957), Vanjikottai Valiban (1958), Kappalotiya Thamizhan (1961), Pennin Perumai (1960) and Kalathur Kannamma (1959). Kalathur Kannamma was Kamal Hasaan’s debut film and it won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil – Certificate of Merit for the Third Best Feature Film in 1961. Ganesan also starred in Veerapandiya Kattabomman (1959) which was selected for the Afro-Asian Film Festival in 1960. The movie also won the nomination for the National Film Award in 1960 as did Kalyana Parisu, but both lost to Bhaaga Pirivinai. The historical fiction film Parthiban Kanavu (1960) won the President's Silver Medal for Best Feature Film. Ganesan is the recipient of the Padmashree Award.
