Biography: Balraj Sahni was born Yudhishthir Sahni and he was an exceptional film and stage actor. He started with stage plays and then entered Bollywood with the film Insaaf (1946). This was followed by Dharti ke laal, Door chalein and other films. But it was Bimal Roy’s Do bigha zameen (1953) that brought his acting to fore. Another classic Balraj Sahni performance was in Kabuliwala (1961) which was based on Tagore’s short story. When his wife Damayanti, and mother of his son Parikshit Sahni, passed away, he married his cousin Santosh Chandok. His famous films include Bindya, Seema, Sone ki chidiya, Lajwanti, Garam hawa and the classic Waqt. He has also starred in Punjabi movies. Balraj was also a prolific writer and a social activist, having worked with Mahatma Gandhi. He passed away in 1973 of cardiac arrest.
