Biography: The once Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu was a Tamil actress. This was before she made her foray into politics. Her debut as the lead actress was in the Kannada film Chinnada Gombe (1964) at the tender age of 15. With a role in Vennira Aadai (1965), which was directed by C. V. Sridhar, she made her Tamil movie debut. The following year, she made her debut in Telegu cinema with Manushulu Mamathalu. She has also acted in a Hindi film Izzat with Dharmendra in 1968.Her movie Pattikada Pattanama, opposite Sivaji Ganeshan went on to win the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Tamil and fetched her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. She has also done two more movies with Sivaji Ganeshan as her costar including Galatta Kalyanam and Deiva Magan (the first Tamil film to be submitted by India for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film). She has also acted in Suryakanthi and Chandradhoyam which were well received by the critics and the former won her another Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1973. Again in 1973, she acted in the Telugu movie Sri Krishna Satya, which won her the third Filmfare Award for Best Actress. Her movies with M. G. Ramachandran including Aayirathil Oruvan, Kavalkaran, Adimai Penn, Engal Thangam, Kudiyirundha Koyil, Ragasiya Police 115 and Nam Naadu were very successful.
