Biography: Kalpana Lajmi is an Indian film director, producer and screenwriter. She started her career by working as an assistant director with the veteran film director Shyam Benegal. Her debut directorial venture was the documentary film D.G. Movie Pioneer in 1978. She then went on to make other documentaries such as A Work Study in Tea Plucking (1979) and Along the Brahmaputra (1981). She made her debut as a feature film director in 1986 with the film Ek Pal (English: A Moment), starring Shabana Azmi and Naseeruddin Shah. She also directed the critically acclaimed Rudaali (1993) starring Dimple Kapadia (she won the National Film Award for Best Actress) and Darmiyaan: In Between (1997) starring Kirron Kher and Tabu. Her other films include Daman: A Victim of Marital Violence (2001) starring Raveena Tandon (she won the National Film Award for Best Actress) and Chingaari (2003). Her first television serial was Lohit Kinare (1988) starring Tanvi Azmi.
