Biography: Ken Watanabe is a Japanese actor, who is known to the English speaking audience for playing the hero’s role in tragedies such as General Tadamichi Kuribayashi in Letters from Iwo Jima and Lord Katsumoto Moritsugu in The Last Samurai (for which, he received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor). He has also been a part of movies such as Batman Begins (2005), Memories of Tomorrow (2007), Shizumanu Taiyo (2010), Inception (2010), Godzilla (2014) and Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014). Among others, he has won the Japan Academy Prize for Best Actor twice. He rose to fame in Japan, making his debut with Tokyo-based theatre troupe En in 1978. His first screen appearance was in 1982, with Michinaru Hanran (Unknown Rebellion), followed by Mibu no koiuta. He made his feature film debut with MacArthur’s Children in 1984.
