Biography: The Marlyn Monroe of India, Madhubala was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi. She got into acting to support her family and started off as a child artist. Her first movie Basant was a big hit. She went on to feature in many movies as child artist. Actress Devika Rani gave her the screen name Madhubala. Her debut as a heroine was at the age of 14 in Neel Kamal. She became a star with the release of Mahal. Her other hits include Dulari, Beqasoor, Tarana and Badal. She even got offers from Hollywood. Madhubala worked with the top directors and top actors of her time. She portrayed the beautiful Anarkali in K Asif’s epic Mughal-e-Azam. Her other movies include Kaala Pani, Mr & Mrs 55, Phagun, Chalti ka naam gaadi and Barsaat ki ek raat. She had a lasting relationship with Dilip Kumar but since he didn’t propose marriage, she married Kishore Kumar. She suffered from a debilitating lung disease and succumbed to it at the age of 36.
