Her role in Aandhi (1974) won her the Filmfare nomination for Best Actress. Suchitra Sen received worldwide fame when she won the best actress award at the Moscow International Film Festival for the movie Saat Paake Bandha, making her the first Indian actress to receive an international film award. She is the recipient of Padma Shri Award, one of the highest civilian awards. She has also been conferred the Banga Bibhushan-West Bengal Government's highest honour. After her retirement she led an elusive life shunning the spotlight and even refused the Dada Saheb Phalke Award, as she wanted to avoid the public eye.
