Anurag Kashyap is on a roll. The filmmaker is emerging on the world map as one of the most intelligent filmmakers from India, who dares to portray radically different stories on the big screen. After giving us cinematic treats such as of Black Friday and Dev D, Kashyap showed his prowess as a hatke filmmaker by making Gangs Of Wasseypur last year. The movie had received a standing ovation at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in 2012. This year too Kashyap gave the discerning Cannes’ audience yet another delicious venture – Ugly. And guess what? This time too, the audiences gave Kashyap’s movie and the actors’ performances a standing ovation.

Ugly is about people who are well past their prime ending up in a life and death situation. It stars Ronit Roy, Rahul Bhatt, Tejaswini Kolhapure, Surveen Chawla, Vineet Kumar Singh and Girish Kulkarni.

Ever since its release at Cannes, the movie has garnered a lot of media attention and appreciation. Rahul Bhatt, plays the lead role in the film, has been getting tremendous applause for his commendable performance. “The feeling has still not sunk in and it still feels like a dream,” said an emotionally-charged Rahul.

We at BollywoodLife are eager to watch Kashyap’s delectable directorial venture and hope that the director continues to shine at Cannes in the years to come!

Sony TV’s Kya Huaa Tera Vaada has come to an end, and boy, are we glad! The show was entertaining while it lasted, minus a few hitches here and there. But lately we’ve been witnessing the tussle for Vihaan between Anika and Bulbul. And when Mona learns about this she fumes at her daughter and pleads her to not become the ‘other woman’ in Vihaan’s life. But the rest of her family including Jatin, Rano, Rajveer and the grandparents think that Bulbul is fighting for her rights and there is nothing wrong in it. Wonder why Mona doesn’t see it the way they do!

Nonetheless, Mona is undeterred and decides to get Bulbul back home by hook or by crook – like that is ever going to work!

In the closing episodes, we will see how Mona realises that Vihaan and Anika’s wedding was a complete lie and how he still loves Bulbul. On the other hand, Jatin will clear Rano’s name by proving that she did not kill anyone, which was really the reason why Vihaan agreed to marry Anika. But since Rano is not responsible for anyone’s death now, Anushka loses her bargaining chip over Vihaan.

Mona learns the full story and decides to get the two love birds married, seeing which Anika tries to commit suicide. Everything Anushka had planned goes down the drain and when she’s about to lose her only daughter, Ms Sarkar turns all apologetic and begs for forgiveness. Being the ideal woman, Mona forgives Anushka and decides to end the drama there.

The show will thus close on a happily ever after note. The last episode of Kya Huaa Tera Vaada will be aired on May 23.

Even after spending 30 glorious years (and counting more) in the big, bad and blindingly-glamorous world of Bollywood, Jackie Shroff has remained ‘real’ to the core. Except for his heavy accent, the 53-year old hasn’t changed a bit. “Main aisach hee hoon bhidu. I haven’t changed at all,” growls Jaggu dada accompanied by a throaty laughter.

As BollywoodLife completed two years this May, we invited the star, who coincidently completes three decades in the industry (his debut film Hero released in 1983), to share in the celebrations. The star was his usual friendly and lively self, with no air of pretensions, as he spoke to the editorial team.

From being a good looking man of the Teen Batti chawl to becoming one of India’s stylish actors of all time, Jackie has come a long way. He talked about his movies, the journey to stardom, friends in B-town, his forthcoming movies and much more in a candid interview with BollywoodLife team. Take a look!

That Kristina Akheeva, the Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 babe is gorgeous and desirable, is no secret really. With a porcelain complexion and features cut out from crystal, her beauty is classic. But go a little deeper and you find the soul of an adventurer and a dreamer, and a person who has made the most of life at an early age.

Born in the picturesque mountainous locales of Central Asia, in Tajikistan, Kristina has literally come a long way. And the sense of adventure that seems to be her natural trait, took her even further once she started modeling at the age of sixteen. However she quit that and chose to give her first love ‘acting’ a shot. And from the amazing conversation we had with the beauty, we can safely say that she is her to stay!

Do you feel that you bagged YPD2 because of your looks and the glamour quotient?

That wouldn’t be entirely false considering that I was chosen for the film because of my Indian looks. But that aside, I’m not just some pretty face who thought let’s give Bollywood a try on a whim. I have been into acting ever since I was a kid. I took part in school plays, and I have had my share of experience acting on stage. But yes, it’s true that I made the transition from an actor to a model. I essentially worked all over the world before I came to India.

Tell us about that… how did you find yourself on Indian shores?

I was born in Tajikistan. Most people don’t even know where it’s located! But I moved from there to Australia when I was seven. When I was sixteen I was getting a few head shots for myself, because for auditions there you need one big headshot photo with all your details written behind it. So this photographer I went to told me that I should send in my pics and try out as a model. I was sixteen then, and I did. That’s when modeling took off for me. Then later I worked with a modeling agency in Singapore for three months. After that I travelled quite a bit. Then after a modeling assignment in India I kind of stayed back for a year. I did tons of ads here, and that’s when I got interested in Bollywood. I saw almost all the movies in my free time! Then I went back and decided that I didn’t want to model anymore, but try my hand at acting instead. I was ready for the whole, work-in-a- coffee-shop-and-give-auditions routine, and struggle a bit. But then I came to India, and landed this project at the right time!

Being in a Bollywood movie and that too in a Deol production must have been a bit of a culture shock at first, given they are the quintessential ‘Punjabi’ family…

Well, to be honest they were very warm. And it wasn’t like I was super awed at every point. I did live in India for a year, so I knew the culture and I knew what to expect. And honestly, the crew and everyone were just so supportive – be it food or be it anything else I required. They would include me in their conversations, and explain the things that I didn’t understand. In fact, Sunny Deol would even ask me about a few shots, and it was so kind of him to make me feel that way because here he is such a senior actor. But it was so chilled out on sets.

Sunny is also known to be shy, and you have a romantic track with him in the movie. Was he just as shy while shooting?

No! He is a trained actor and he has been doing it for decades. What I noticed about actors is that they turn themselves on when they face the camera. The biggest superstars, they will be shy and reserved in their personal space, but when the camera comes on they just light up and give their best. So it was very professional that way. There were no awkward moments for him or me!

None for you? Come on, you must have stumbled a whole lot while saying the Hindi dialogue!

(Laughs) Yes, a few. Saying my lines was never a problem because I play this character of a Punjabi girl born and brought up in the UK. So that came naturally to me. What were tough were the songs! Because my lines I spoke slowly, given that that was how my character was supposed to say these lines. But the singing was really fast, and I fumbled quite a bit. The most I did was when I had to sing a Hindi rap song. And I got the lyrics just a few days before the shoot. I believe I had the most difficult time doing that. Thankfully that was left out in the edit. But yeah, other than that it was smooth sailing.

Well that and the fact that it was so cold when we were shooting in London. I mean, the guys would wear all jackets and stylish layered clothes, while the girls would be wearing a flowery summer dress when it was freezing outside! I don’t know, but that’s a Bollywood thing I guess, where guys dress up all macho and layered. So yea, after the shot I would run to the heater.

Tell us about the three Deols. How was it working with them?

Well, Bobby is like a very chilled out guy. He hangs out on his own, very cool to talk to, and very friendly. Sunny on the other hand is this very disciplined guy who wakes up early and goes to bed on time. He has this set pattern about how he shoots. But again, he is very protective and caring, and always ready to help. Actually that’s all three of them! And Dharamji is just a very beautiful human being. I had the best time talking to him. He would tell me stories of the earlier days of Bollywood, and how it was shooting back then. And it’s just so interesting to get that sort of knowledge from someone like him, who has been a part of the industry for so long. For me, someone who is an outsider, it really made me feel at home, and helped me connect with the industry.

Who do you look at as your competition in Bollywood, since there are a number of foreign beauties who have made a transition from modelling to Bollywood films… like Nargis Fakhri?

I know what you’re saying but I prefer not to look at it that way. Because currently I am in such a happy and a positive space that I would rather focus on what I am doing, than start that whole competition thing. It’s just too negative, and I believe in not thinking on those lines considering I am only one film old and have a lot to achieve.

Some Hindi movies you’ve loved?

Oh… I just saw Talaash a few days back, and I loved it. I loved Aamir Khan in it. He is my favourite actor. I also love Kareena Kapoor. I believe she is quite cool, and has this tremendous energy about her! I also love Vidya Balan. I saw Kahaani, and I believe she is a great actor in her own right.

What’s next for you?

For now it’s just the movie promotions. After that, I haven’t thought much. But I do know that I want to continue acting. That’s certain!

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan appeared in a beautiful teal gown at the Cleopatra premiere held at the 66^th Cannes International Film Festival. The fitted bodice and the flowing train make her look like an absolute diva. Garnishing her look with a bright lipstick, Ash settles for a pop of hot pink tint.

Yes, we have been pointing our fingers at Ash’s bland hairdos at the fest, and finally she’s out of that ‘letting her hair loose’ mode by opting for a top-knot. But honestly it’s not the best option. Since Ash is still pretty much her plump self, she could have displayed a nice romantic lower updo that would have made her well-rounded face look slender.

What we really like is the play of contrast between pink and teal. The little diamond earrings add to the exoticness. And although the flabby arms are an eyesore, Ash makes up for all those fatty defects with her infectious confidence!

These days, actors often get injured on the sets and continue working despite the ooh-aah-ouch scenario. Akshay Kumar experienced this while shooting the action scenes for the Thupakki remake yesterday. We hear that apna khiladi Kumar had a miraculous escape when a truck passed over his foot during the sequence, but he didn’t suffer any major injuries.

Though Akshay has performed some death-defying, daredevil stunts in the past, this was quite painful and he was rushed to the nearby hospital, informs our khabroo. Considering the pain and bruised feet of the Special 26 actor, doctors feared the worst, but X-ray reports showed that only some tissues were damaged and the bones were all intact.

From what we hear, Kumar is back to Mumbai now. And even though the restless actor is now raring to go, we hope he takes adequate amount of rest and is extra careful while performing his next set of action sequences for this AR Murugadossfilm.

Think of Cannes and your mind will immediately transport you to the realm where flawlessly beautiful celebs dressed in the perfect designer outfits walk the red carpet with unmatchable elegance and equipoise. Now just imagine the same guests standing in serpentine queues in the anticipation of a ‘grand menu’ comprising cold samosas, warm colas and a smidgen of daal palak each. If that sounds like comedy of horrible errors, wake up to the less glamorous reality of this year’s dinner night at the glitzy French Riviera. A little birdie who is keeping a close watch on the blinding razzmatazz of the 66th Cannes International Film Festival tell us that horrible management and disastrous catering services shot the festival into the limelight for the wrong reasons.

We hear that the Indian cinema centenary celebrations at Cannes culminated in a gala dinner. Much to too many people’s collective horror, the waiters had not been briefed about the large number of vegetarians present. It took an eternity for the thalis to arrive at the venue. The predicament of the special guests did not end there. The food – after it’s long awaited arrival – comprised cold samosas, rock-hard puris, tiny helpings of dal makhni and insipid palak paneer. Even the most anticipated pudding did not arrive; the frustrated guests were completely fed up – though not with food – and left instead of waiting for dessert.

And just when the organisers thought they had somehow managed to curb the crisis by feeding their respectable guests – albeit with that not-so-classy menu – catastrophe struck. Soon a number of guests developed bad tummies and started scampering to the bathrooms. Some even rushed back to their hotel rooms on finding that ominous ‘occupied’ sign on the accessible facilities at the party.

Our sympathies are with those stunningly dressed folks who must have had a tough time taking off those nicely layered, intricately designed designer labelled clothes to…err…get rid of that magnificent feast!

Call it the Indian Premier League (IPL) effect or anything else, movie buffs will be deprived of watching a good film this week. Considering the three small banner movies with no major star cast – Ishkq in Paris, Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke and Ziindagi 50-50 – releasing this Friday, we see a lull in business for Bollywood. The finale week of IPL 6 is considered to be one of the major reasons for filmmakers to be unwilling to release their films at this time, especially when cricket fever is on its high and has crème de la creme matches scheduled this week.

“I feel the pick of the lot this week will be Fast & Furious 6,” says leading exhibitor-distributor Akshaye Rathi. “Fast & Furious 6 belongs to a franchise that has always been popular in India and has grown from strength to strength with every edition. With DAR giving it a solid release, it’s bound to not only bring back its good old loyal audience to the cinemas, but also draw the youth (since its summer vacation) in large numbers!”

About the three Hindi films Rathi says, “Ishkq in Paris is releasing after a bit of a delay since it was made, but fortunately it still looks fresh. A big chunk of the movie-going youth has grown up watching Preity Zinta on the silver screen and had their teenage (onscreen) crushes on her. The limited release of the film (through PVR Pictures) may not allow it to reach the length and breadth of the country, but a chunk of the 90s / the present generation kids in urban centres may just find themselves at cinemas enjoying the latest offering from their teenage heartthrob!”

“Hum Hai Raahi… is another film that’s been delayed and is finally hitting screens across India. The film features Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla with a fresh lead pair. Despite the lukewarm publicity, the film could just get a bit of an audience. It’s a clean, happy family film that is coming to cinemas after quite a while and it may appeal to families in the centres where it is releasing,” points out Akshaye. Talking about the BO prospect of the third release, Ziindagi 50 50 he says, “The only element that can give a film like Ziindagi… a bit of a draw is sex and the film seems to have enough and more of it. While Veena Malik has become a household name (for all the wrong reasons), her popularity among the front-benchers is undeniable. This might just work in the stalls of single screen cinemas in B and C class centres.”

Rajesh Thadani (Distributor, Multimedia Combines) feels, “Fast & Furious 6 is the only major release this week which has the potential to beat three relatively small banner films. If the content is good, the films might pick up by word of mouth. But as of now, I can see nothing but only Fast & Furious 6!”

We feel that the three Bollywood films have got a smaller chance to survive and do well. Though Preity has tried to promote Ishkq in Paris single-handedly as far as possible, unfortunately there’s been no buzz about the film. Similarly, Hum Hai Raahi Car Ke is Sanjay Dutt’s first release after he was arrested, but even that may not help the makers get a decent number of footfalls. And Ziindagi 50 50 may perform in the single screens, but that’s not too likely!
