Evergreen star Dev Anand, one of the icons of Indian cinema, died Saturday after suffering a massive cardiac arrest in London. He was 88. “His son Sunil came out of the bathroom and saw that Dev saab was not responding. He called the doctor, who said that he had a heart attack. He died at 10 in the night in London,” said Mohan Churiwala, Dev Anand’s manager. The iconic star is survived by his wife, former actor Kalpana Karthik, a son and a daughter. As soon as the news spread, a grief-stricken Bollywood offered condolences and recalled his significant contribution to cinema. While Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan said an “era has come to an end”, actor Shabana Azmi said the legend “will be missed by millions but will live on through his movies”. And live he will through his movies, as he starred in some ahead-of-its-time films like Guide. Dev Anand began his career with Hum Ek Hain in 1946. However, he got his first big break with Ziddi in 1948. The flamboyant star is also known for giving big hits like Baazi, Guide, Jewel Thief, Johnny Mera Naam, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, CID and Tere Mere Sapne. His last outing as an actor and director was Chargesheet in 2011, a dud at the box office. Dev Anand will be cremated in London next week.
