Urdu poet Akhlaq Mohammad Khan, better known as Shahryar who immortalised himself by writing the lyrics of the Rekha-starrer, Umrao Jaan, passed away in Aligarh on February 13 after battling lung cancer. He was 75 and received the Jnanpith Award for 2008 in September last year. Best known for having written songs like Dil cheez kya hai aap meri jaan lijiye, In aakhon ki masti ke mastaane hazaron hain from Umrao Jaan, his last rites will be performed in his home town. Shahryar was born June 16, 1936, in a village named Anwalla in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. He received his early education at Bulandshahar and then studied at Aligarh Muslim University. He was appointed as a lecturer in Urdu at Aligarh Muslim University in 1986 and served until in 1996 he retired as chairman of the Urdu Department of the University.
