R Madhavan’s ‘Ghar Jamai’ to be a film

The Tanu Wed Manu actor suggested to Anant Mahadevan, director of ‘Ghar Jamai’, a popular TV series of the 90s, to make it into a feature film. If you remember it was one of Maddy’s first TV serial as a protagonist. Thanks to it, the engineer-turned actor became a household name. While he played the South Indian son-in-law, Mandira Bedi was his wife in the comedy series. So after remakes and sequels, making successful serials into a film is the latest trend. Recently two other TV shows– Khichdi and Office Office – were made into films. But its failures doesn’t perturb Mahadevan, who will also helm the film version. He says, “I don’t want to name them but there have been two or three films that have been made on popular television serials and they fell flat on their face because they made it like television show repeating the same cast, same situations. Why would one spend Rs.300 to watch what they can get on television”. It looks like after the sweet success of Tanu Weds Manu, Madhavan is hooked on to love and marriage capers.
