B-town hunks and divas walked the red carpet at the first awards function of the year. While some sizzled, others fizzled. Here’s a quick look…

The 20th Annual Life OK Annual Screen Awards was attended by the who’s who of Bollywood. While some won our hearts, others just made us ask ‘Why?’. Deepika Padukone looked quite the heartthrob, but Ranveer Singh was a disaster. While Abhay Deol turned up with a black eye alongside his ultra-chic girlfriend Preeti Desai, Abhishek Bachchan was seen sans wifey Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. And While Rekha and Jaya Bachchan shared a warm hug (ahem!), Huma Quereshi posed with Kalki Koechlin

, as if to put to rest all the rumours about other women. Here’s a quick sneak peek at all the guests at the Screen Awards and our verdict….

The star of the night was Deepika Padukone in a black and gold Alexander McQueen gown. Something about her hairdo and outfit made her look like an Egyptian beauty. Thanks to her tall frame, Deepika looks fab no matter what she wears, but this one was a stunning start to what is sure to be a triumphant season of trophies and accolades. Deepika’s Ram-Leela co-star Ranveer Singh was seen in a vibrant velvet blue coat – sans his beard and handlebar moustache he has already lowered his sex appeal quotient, while his hideous choice of clothes made us shudder!

Sonakshi Sinha, who has been bashed by the critics over ‘n’ over again seems to have shed her ‘auntyji’ image with a vengeance. The Lootera lady wore a nude and silver Amit GT gown accessorised with Viange jewelery. We’re totally in love with the soft waves of her hair falling over her shoulders and her lovely pink lips. She was closely rivalled by Kalki Koechlin in a funky Nikhil Thampi saree. The sheer pleats showed off her sexy legs, while the belt cinched her slender waist beautifully – very nice! She sure knows how to carry off a quirky outfit, no? Huma Qureshi also chose Nikhil Thampi; the one-shouldered maroon dress with a knee-high slit did no justice to her frame, making her look chunkier, but the Atelier Mon ear cuffs were totally yummy! We so want! Gangs of Wasseypur co-actor Richa Chadda was seen in a black and maroon Innana by Monica & Karishma gown. From her hairdo to the choice of outfit, everything was just wrong. Why do such talented actors let us down with their sartorial tastes, we wonder.

The B-town hunks provided some distraction. Abhay Deol made an appearance with girlfriend Preeti Desai – a hot pair, we must say. Abhay was in semi-formals, his most notable accessory being a fabulous black eye, while Preeti wore a black gown with a thigh-high slit and a keyhole neckline. Shahrukh Khan looked dapper in a three-piece suit and a bow tie. His unshaven look and cute dimples made us smile fondly, though that blond streak was a bit of a put-off. The legend of Bollywood Amitabh Bachchan chose a grey metallic suit with a red tie. His son Abhishek Bachchan wore a tux. Both Bachchan men looked hunkalicious and we don’t blame Jaya Bachchan for holding firmly on to them!

Shahid Kapoor opted for a velvety black suit and a beard and long hair – we aren’t used to seeing the chocolate boy in this avatar, but he ain’t too bad, huh? Young Varun Dhawan sported a rather ageing white coat with black piping, a white flower tucked into his shirt pocket – kisne diya? Other celebs who caught our eye in black were Vivek Oberoi, Sonu Sood, Riteish Deshmukh, Rajkumar Yadav, Madhur Bhandarkar, Karan Johar, Ayan Mukerjee, Boman Irani, Anupam Kher, Ali Zafar and Amit Sadh. Nothing beyond the usual, really. Riteish’s black bandhgala certainly won this round. Farhan Akhtar chose to be different in a Nehru jacket – nice, no? Different isn’t always good – consider Aftab Shivdasani, whose floral shirt underneath his blazer showed us that he really needs to shock to grab headlines; a tad too desperate, hai na?

Though Farhan made our heads turn, his wife Adhuna Akhtar made our eyes close. The weirdly draped saree held together with a brooch looked awful. And as if that wasn’t enough, she had clipped a weird headpiece over her forehead. Why! Jaya Bachchan in a pink saree did old school, classy, elegant, ordinary. Was she ever a filmstar, we wonder! Divya Dutta too wore pink…or was that a wedding cake that had escaped its bakery shelf?

Bipasha recently launched her own label, didn’t she? How does she expect people to follow her style sense if she dresses like this? Bips wore a blue Manish Malhotra creation teamed with a kundan necklace by Maheep Kapoor. Neck up, she was eye candy; neck down, we would rather not think about. Juhi Chawla chose an Anita Dongre outfit…or was that more than one? We can’t decide. Divya Khosla Kumar was seen in mint-green Sabyasachi and looked pretty, flaunting her dimples. Kajal Aggarwal was seen in a black mesh gown, Sophie Choudry wore a pink and black Manish Malhotra saree and Neha Dhupia opted for a Ranna Gill maxi. We would rather not comment on any of them. Beauty Shruti Haasan wore a Gaurav Gupta gown with sheer lace for that sneak peek. Did it work? Not for us! Vaani Kapoor, who starred in Shuddh Desi Romance chose was seen in a blingy number. The sequinned gown blinded us, so we needed to take a well-deserved break.

Thank God for Kajol – she chose a soft peach Shantanu and Nikhil gown teamed with House of Chic turquoise and gold earrings. Beautiful, hai na? Swara Bhaskar, who won our hearts with her acting in Raanjhanaa, wore a Rabani and Rakha fusion saree gown. Chitrangda Singh was seen in a white Dior gown with a silk obi belt, a simple look that deserved better than unkempt hair; but she managed to grab eyeballs all the same.

Himmatwala girl Tammannaah wore a Carmen Marc Valvo gown. She got it all wrong – the strapless print dress, the pink lips and the sideswept hair…none of it was good enough for the red carpet. Aditi Rao Hydari chose a black Harsh Harsh bodycon curve gown and an Audrey Hepburn hairdo and looked like a doll as she posed for the ‘bugs. But the showstopper for us at the Star Screen Awards was Sonal Chauhan who was seen in a Amritaraj Bora sheer golden gown – wow, she sure dazzled!
