We never thought it was possible, but the singer was unenthusiastic at the launch of a new TV show
It’s not easy being an independent singer in this Bollywood-obsessed nation. We understand that and even empathise with Suraj Jagan who received popular fame 20 years after he started his career when he sang Give me some sunshine in 3 Idiots. But that still doesn’t excuse his apparent lack of interest in his performance yesterday at a Mumbai nightspot by the sea. Suraj along with singer-composer Nandini Srikar, rapper Sunny and Bollywood singer Shree took the stage at the launch of a new TV show, Na Bole Tum Na Maine Kuch Kaha. They were to create fusion music, as the show is about two completely different people coming together. We had high hopes, but sadly, Suraj hardly sang at all. He stood in one corner wearing dark sunglasses after sunset, hummed a couple of lines intermittently but just let his fellow male singers take centrestage throughout the event. As they sang the title in varying tunes every time, exhorting the audience to join in, Suraj simply stood tapping his foot. Considering the fact that most of the attendees were there to hear him sing, it was quite a bit of a disappointment. Not at all what we expected from the singer of Dil dhadakne do from Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. Tsk tsk.
