Akshay Kumar: John has improved since ‘Garam Masala’

The two actors are back together on screen after six years, and Akki has only good things to say about his co-star

Akshay Kumar is gearing up for the release of his next film Desi Boyz and is more than happy that John Abraham is part of it too. Rohit Dhawan’s film is the first one after Garam Masala six years ago to bring these two stars together and Akki believes the intervening years have been good on John. “We are coming back together on the big screen after six long years. We were not offered any movies together during that period. While shooting for this film, we had much more fun than we had in Garam Masala. So, we were wondering why no one ever thought of casting us together all these years,” said Akshay. “We have become quite good friends now. And, trust me, John has improved a lot since then, especially his comic timing. The way he has improved his muscles, his comic timing has also improved.”

Akshay has tried everything from action and romance to comedy. In Desi Boyz, he will be seen stripping and pole dancing for the first time. That’s what he liked about his character, Jerry Patel- that it’s a different kinda role. “I had a lot of fun while doing this movie. First of all I haven’t played this kind of character ever. When the role was narrated to me, I knew this was something I wanted to do. And, secondly, its director Rohit Dhawan told me the film is based on the real-life incident of two people who had to take extreme paths to survive during recession,” he said.  Desi Boyz follows two friends who lose their jobs during the recession in Britain and have to strip for a living. That obviously doesn’t go down well with their girlfriends – played by Deepika Padukone and Chitrangda Singh.

Akshay’s most recent films haven’t been well-received at the box office, but he is undettered. “I will always do a film I believe in, I can connect to and my fans can relate to it as well. So even if Patiala House didn’t do well commercially, it was critically acclaimed. I was close to the film because it dealt with the emotional bond between a father and son,” he said. Akki hopes to entertain fans with Joker, Rowdy Rathore and Housefull 2 next year, but he doesn’t want to restrict himself to commercial films. “I do want to produce commercial films. But if I get a good script, I would love to make a National Award-winning movie too,” he said.
