AR Rahman jams ‘Satyameva Jayate’ with Mick Jagger

Slumdog Millionaire seems to have been the first big step in the music maestro’s conquest of the West. Now he goes all the way…

The Mozart of Madras, as he is often called, has joined up with some heavyweights from the music biz in the West to form a new band, SuperHeavy. That is old news. And the big names are known already – apart from Rahman, there are Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Damian (Jr Gong) Marley and Joss Stone. The first song to be heard from the album this group put together was Miracle Worker and now the second single has just been released. Called Satyameva Jayate, it stars Jagger in a rather unusual avatar: singing in Sanskrit! Stewart, Stone and Marley join in. The brief to Rahman for this one was simple. According to him, Stewart invited him to add his voice to the album saying that, “We want this to be a great Indian song too.” And Rahman has always wanted to take “one of the morals of Indian culture, which is Satyameva Jayate, and make it a song”. This comes after so many honours on the music-man’s resume that we are quite losing count. His most recent is not too well known – Trinity College, London, an internationally reputed music conservatory, has added Bollywood and Indian classical music to its syllabus offerings – Bollywood will now be part of the electronic keyboard section of the music exam. How come? As the college authorities say, “The international success of Rahman’s music has been very important in bringing Indian music to the world platform.” Encore, Rahman sir, encore!Subscribe to me on YouTube
