Ayesha Takia’s father-in-law Abu Azmi takes a U-turn after facing flak

After facing criticism, Azmi recently clarified his remark on the anti rape law

After facing a lot of flak, Ayesha Takia’s father-in-law and Samajwadi party leader, Abu Azmi clarified his statement made on the anti-rape law. Azmi clarified, “I never said that the girl who is raped should be punished. I said rapist should be punished and girl is a victim. I said that all of us should show solidarity with the girl,” He further added, “I will never make such statement, only a mad person will say such things.”

On Friday, the Samajwadi party leader had made a controversial statement on capital punishment for rapists. He had said, “Rape is punishable by hanging in Islam. But here, nothing happens to women, only to men. Even the woman is guilty.”

Azmi further added, “In India, if you have sex with a person with consent, it’s fine. But if that same person complains, it’s a problem. Nowadays, we see a lot of such cases. Girls complain when someone touches them, and even when someone doesn’t touch them. It becomes a problem then, and the man’s honour is ruined in this. If rape happens with or without consent, it should be punished as prescribed in Islam.”

As soon as this report came out, people expressed their angst on social media and criticised his narrow approach towards women. Azmi also had to face the brunt from his own family. His son Farhan Azmi, a member of the Samajwadi Party and a candidate for Lok Sabha elections from Mumbai North Central said, “Consensual sex is a private matter, it’s a freedom given to us by the constitution.” He further added, “We cannot be discussing these things in front of TV cameras. I have spoken to my father about the comments. I stand against every person who is insulting a woman.”

Bollywood actor and Farhan’s wife Ayesha Takia reacted on Twitter. She said, “if wot im reading about my father in laws statements r true then me and Farhan are deeply embarrassed n ashamed…(sic).”

Interestingly, the remarks were made on Friday, April 11, 2014 and his clarification came two days later on April 13. Wonder what makes him wait so long to clarify on a statement that he believed was tweaked. Was it his busy schedule or jus an ego ride? What do you think peeps?
