What seemed to be a typical multiplex film has won more hearts than RK Jr’s previous relatively commercial outing

It seems that Anurag Basu’s Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra-Ileana D’Cruz starrer, Barfi! might change the trend, and bust the myth that if a film gets high critical acclaim, it is usually a dud at the box office. Barfi!, in fact, has received a bigger opening than Ranbir’s previous outing, Rockstar. Barfi! had all the odds stacked against it, especially Basu’s previous film, Kites. Kudos to the makers of Barfi!, who not only made a film that won over the critics, but also made a dent at the BO.

After making Rs 8.75 crores on its opening day at the domestic box office Barfi! saw a good jump on the second day by making about Rs 11.50 crores. Rockstar had made Rs 6 crore on its first day. The digits could have been better if the makers had trusted their film more by giving it a bigger release in the single screens. What remains to be seen is whether Barfi! will be able to take on Kareena Kapoor’s Heroine that releases next Friday and sustain the good numbers in its second week.
