Bombay Talkies: What is Zoya Akhtar’s story all about?

The short story about a school boy’s obsession with Katrina Kaif in Bombay Talkies is inspired by a real life incident

Zoya Akhtar has taken real life inspiration to reel life in Bombay Talkies which is about an innocent school boy who aspires to be a film star like Katrina Kaif and how he even imitates her. So obsessed is he with the babe that he dances his heart out on hearing the song, Sheila ki jawaani!

Not many know that Zoya actually came across a kid a few years ago at a social gathering who’s fascinated with Katrina to the level of obsession. The Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara director was touched and at the same time saddened by this. It was a memory she carried with her for two years. And when the opportunity to direct Bombay Talkies knocked Zoya’s door, she could only think of presenting the ‘real’ story in the film.

A source close to Zoya said, “It was an incident which touched Zoya’s heart and when she was approached to direct a short film she thought this story would be ideal and decided to share it with the audiences.” Akhtar has essentially taken the real kid’s characteristics and portrayed it through the child actor in her film. Hmm… quite innovative, no?
