While Divya Khosla Kumar’s college rom-com got off to a flying start at the box office, the Madhuri Dixit-Nene starrer had a thanda opening on its first day. However, Dedh Ishqiya picked up on Saturday thanks to good reviews…
Last week, Abhishek Chaubey’s Dedh Ishqiya and Divya Khosla Kumar’s Yaariyan hit the theatres. Since the films belong to completely different genres, we expected them to do well, and they did. Divya Kumar’s directorial debut witnessed a dhamakedaar response at the ticket windows on the day of its release. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh wrote, “Smash hit music + terrific promotion + youth factor = Fantastic start at the BO. Yaariyan fetches flying start. Friday – 6.30 cr nett. Excellent! Yaariyan Cost of Prod – 9 cr. P&A – 10 cr. Total cost – 19 cr. Substantial chunk of investment already recovered from Satellite rights.” As per the latest reports, Yaariyan has raked in approximately Rs 11 crore at the domestic box office already.
Dedh Ishqiya, on the other hand, had a dry start on Friday, but with the word of mouth and positive reviews the comedy thriller managed to fare well over the weekend. “Dedh Ishqiya witnessed escalation over the weekend. Biz grew with each passing day”, posted Adarsh.
Though Yaariyan is clearly ahead of Dedh Ishqiya in the numbers game as of now, wethinks the latter will certainly catch up. But we hope it’s sooner and not later, coz next week Salman Khan’s much-awaited Jai Ho will hit the screens. And we all know that when a Salman film releases, no other movie stands a chance at the box office, hai na?
