Anurag Basu’s heartwarming film has turned out to be the surprise blockbuster of the year
The Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz starrer Barfi! was definitely a promising film, but even the trade pundits hadn’t predicted such a fantastic fate for the film at the box office. This Anurag Basu movie has been driven by critics’ reviews and positive word of mouth, and that has translated into great business at the BO.
The film made Rs 56. 54 crores in its first week and has had a great second weekend too as it made around Rs 15 crores. The second weekend collections of Barfi! are at par with big budget films like Agneepath and Bol Bachchan. The only films to have had a better second weekend this year are Housefull 2, Rowdy Rathore and Ek Tha Tiger. So Barfi!‘s collections in India stand at Rs 71.54 crore.
With the fresh buzz surrounding the movie after its selection as India’s official entry into the foreign language film category at the Oscars, Barfi!, which was made at a budget of Rs 30 crores, is slated to continue doing great business in its second week too.
Also, with Heroine showing decline after a good opening weekend and with no big releases lined up for the next couple of weeks, Barfi!’s chances of making Rs 100 crore in India itself are strong. And if that happens Ranbir will make his entry into the much-hyped 100 crore club, and it will be a second Rs 100 crore flick for Priyanka whose Agneepath crossed the mark earlier this year.
The overall collections (which include overseas territories) have already touched the Rs 100 crore mark though. Barfi! has done well overseas in the first week, raking in 2.25 million dollars. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted : “#Barfi has grossed 100 cr *worldwide* in 10 days.”
