The Kapoor lad is undoubtedly talented – after all, acting is in his blood. But his choice of films and his very in-your-face personal life have made his journey to stardom more like a one-way ticket to struggle-dom, hai na?
Ever since Besharam turned out to be a dud at the box office, Ranbir Kapoor has been lying low. In fact, the talented actor has now become more cautious about choosing his films, as he doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes he made with the hugely hyped movie co-starring Pallavi Sharda and his parents, Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh. But looking at the list of his new projects, we aren’t sure if he has succeeded in avoiding pitfalls. RK’s next, Bombay Velvet with Anushka Sharma and Karan Johar, is being directed by Anurag Kashyap. And though the film is set in the early ‘50s and Ranbir plays a street fighter, It doesn’t seem like a film that will appeal to the typical Indian movie-going janata. The genre is not what viewers nurtured on Dabangg and Chennai Express will like too much. Also, the film has been in the news only for one reason: Katrina Kaif’s visits to the sets in Sri Lanka. Though the Dhoom:3 babe is not a part of the Anurag Kashyap film, she flew to the tiny island nation to keep Ranbir company during the shoot. And besides the not-so-secret secret-prem kahaani, there is hardly any buzz about this movie – not a good thing, na?
As for Jr Kapoor’s next film Jagga Jasoos, the audience will see Ranboo’s comic side – now that ain’t new. That act is a familiar one – Ajab Prem ki Ghazab Kahaani, anyone? So unless its better in JJ than in APKGK, it isn’t going to wow us in the least. And just like Bombay Velvet, the only reason why Jagga Jasoos has grabbed attention is coz of Kat and Ranbir coming together onscreen again. While their chemistry was appreciated in Ajab Prem, this time it may not work – simply coz real life couples usually fail to sizzle in reel life. Remember Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan in Kurbaan and Ranbir-Deepika Padukone in Bachna Ae Haseeno?
We know, one flop does not make a disaster, especially after super-hit successes like Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, but we suggest Ranbir thinks a bit before he heads down the Shahid Kapoor route. While Sasha is slowly finding his way back into Bollywood after a string of flops following the BO record of Jab We Met, Katrina’s alleged (since neither will confirm yet) boyfriend really needs to prioritise his needs and think more than twice before signing up to do a film. It will also help if he does not manage to annoy a certain Salman Khan in the process, but that is another story for another day….
