Since 1946, Cannes Film Festival is a platform for showcasing not just widespread talent but unique fashion styles as well

Deepika Padukone, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Mallika Sherawat, Sonam Kapoor and Frieda Pinto have sizzled the Cannes red carpet in the past. Be it the elegant Indian saree or the sexy thigh high split gowns, our leading ladies of Bollywood, surely know how to get their glam on and dazzle on the red carpet. Here’s a look at some of the styles donned by the B-town beauties…

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan: Since 2002, Aishwarya Rai has been a familiar face at the Cannes red carpet. First seen promoting Devdas alongside Shahrukh Khan, this beauty has had her moments of glorious fashion victories and faux pas through the years. In the year 2013, the Guzaarish actor was seen wearing a black lace and sequined Elie Saab creation. Criticized for her weight issues and incapability of keeping fit, the Bachchan bahu shut those blabbering mouths as she carried the Saab attire with elegance and grace. In 2012, Aishwarya was seen wearing an Angelo Katsapis outfit and surprised many as she was expected to turn up in an Abu Jani-Sandeep Khosla attire. In the same year, she donned a Roberto Cavalli and faced tons of bantering by the fashion critics for her choice. Ash’s stint at the Cannes red carpet isn’t as glorious as her Bollywood innings. In fact, Ms Rai has forever been under the fashion police scanner as far as her style statements on this platform is concerned. We hope Aaradhya Bachchan’s yummy mummy, manages to surprise us this time around.

Sonam Kapoor: When it comes to fashion, Sonam Kapoor is surely on top of her game. Known as a fashion icon in the industry today, Sonam has only upped her game every year with her unique style displays at Cannes. In 2013, the Saawariya actor sizzled on the red carpet with her Dolce and Gabbana floral dress, topped with her mom Sunita’s necklace which she wore. In the same year, she wore an Anamika Khanna white lace saree topped with a golden embroidered jacket and Gucci shoes. The eye grabber was her huge pearl Nathani (nose ring) which she carried off with ease. And while her attempts were good, this wasn’t the best of Sonam. Not to forget she was more in news thanks to her brawl with Aishwarya, for a well known news agency captioned Ms Kapoor’s pictures as an ‘unidentified guest’. That must have been a big downer for the Raanjhanaa actor, hai na?

Mallika Sherawat: One would expect Mallika Sherawat to get it right on the red carpet if not Bollywood. However, after many fashion disasters, the Murder actress has finally learnt the rules of the fashion world it seems. In 2012, Sherawat went all out bold with her deep backless Ali Madhavi gown. Although donning a highly revealing avatar, Sherawat managed to look sexy and was given thumbs up by critics for her guts. She surely surprised many last year at the red carpet with her Dolce and Gabbana black and white gown, probably her best attire till date. The same year she wore golden Pucci gown, looking simple and elegant. And we at Bollywoodlife revealed what the Dirty Politics heroine will wear at the Cannes this year. So hopefully Ms Sherawat’s desi avatar will grab more attention than her antics.

Freida Pinto: An actor who inspired many with her ‘Rags to Riches’ story, Freida Pinto doesn’t fail when it comes to turning the heat up in Cannes. It’s very evident that Pinto is a fan of fancy long gowns. Last year the Slumdog Millionare actor was seen wearing a shimmering beige gown with a slide slit by Indian designer Sanchita. The same year, the face of L’Oreal appeared in a long pink gown by none other than Gucci. Pinto was also seen in a black sparkly Versace gown with a deep slit. A look back at Cannes and one thing we know for sure, the dusky hot Indian is a fan of those slits!

Others who have made appearances on this red carpet, made an impact but are not regulars include Deepika Padukone who flaunted her RK tattoo and sexy figure in an Indian saree by Rohit Bal, Nandita Das who looked comfortable in a more traditional nine yard and Minisha Lamba who made headlines only to be wrongly labelled Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

BollywoodLifers, who do you think will rock the 67th Cannes Film Festival this year?
