Hansal Mehta’s latest offering had a sluggish start on Friday but his film did well over weekend coz of the positive reviews and strong word-of-mouth
CityLights starring Rajkummar Rao and Patralekha in the lead roles hit the theatres on Friday (May 30). Directed by National Award winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta, the film failed to get a good opening and ended up raking in Rs 70 lakh on day 1. However, the collections went up on Saturday and Sunday courtesy good word-of-mouth and rave reviews. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted on Twitter, “Citylights Fri 70 lacs, Sat 1.32 cr, Sun 1.55 cr. Total – 3.57 cr nett. India biz.” What’s commendable is that Mehta’s film managed to pull in crowds to the cinema halls despite IPL finals on Sunday. In fact, CityLights which has been made on a budget of Rs 2 crore and P & A of approximately Rs 4 crore, has already recovered Rs 7 crore from its satellite rights and music. Impressive, hai na? But sadly that’s not the case with Ekta Kapoor’s Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi which released alongside CityLights.
While Ekta’s comic caper didn’t get cash registers jingling, Tiger Shroff’s debut film Heropanti co-starring Kriti Sanon continued its good run at the ticket windows even in its second weekend. “#Heropanti [Week 2] Fri 2.07 cr, Sat 2.59 cr. Total – 40.57 cr nett. Heading towards 50 cr mark. India biz. SMASH HIT,” posted Adarsh.
So far Heropanti has managed to rule at the box office but it will have a tough time in the coming week as Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha starrer Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty is set hit the screens on June 6.
