B-town celebs made an attempt to draw attention to the issue of crime against women

As the Delhi gang-rape victim succumbed to injuries in Singapore, there was furore all across the country. And Bollywood celebrities, enraged by the shocking and sad incident took to the streets. The silent protest led by veteran actor Shabana Azmi saw B-town in full attendance with Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Genelia, D’souza, Mandira Bedi, Kailash Kher, Soni Razdan, Mahesh Bhatt, Makarand Deshpande, Sherlyn Chopra, Satish Kaushik, Om Puri, Mika, Javed Akhtar and Meeta Vashisht participating in the march.

The walk from Juhu beach to Kaifi Azmi Park in Bandra was somber, and Jaya Bachchan broke down, as Shabana Azmi gave a short but poignant speech about the state of women in the country. “We cannot let the anger pass. It will be a greater betrayal. We have to do some soul searching. The first solution should come from within the family that should treat the women as equals and not deify them as goddesses, something that is part of our schizophrenic society,” said Ms Azmi. The Ram Leela pair Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh too came together to attend the rally that had around 1,200 people in attendance.

The march was just one among the many ways that celebrities tried to reach out and connect with the larger population on this issue that has affected the entire nation. Kudos to them for showing such strength and solidarity!
