The production house will release 14 big films this year
After a memorable 2013 that included successes like Chennai Express, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Race 2, Kai Po Che, ABCD, Ship of Theseus, The Lunchbox and Shahid, it looks like 2014 is going to be another blockbuster year for Hollywood’s biggest player in India – Disney UTV. The company has announced as many as 14 Bollywood releases for the year, several of which have the potential to be record breakers.
Though Disney UTV does not have a Shahrukh Khan release this year, unless of course they pay vast sums of money to acquire Farah Khan’s Happy New Year for which discussions are currently on with Reliance Entertainment, they are well covered with the other Khans. Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kick stars Salman Khan and the star’s Ek Tha Tiger director Kabir Khan has re-teamed with that film’s Katrina Kaif and will attempt to resuscitate Saif Ali Khan’s career with Phantom.
The jewel in the Disney UTV slate is indubitably Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K. Aamir Khan held the highest grosser record for years with Hirani’s 3 Idiots, a crown that he briefly lost to Chennai Express and Krrish 3 before roaring back to the throne with the unfortunate success that is Dhoom:3. Thanks to blind trust in Hirani’s writing and filmmaking skills, our audience is likely to ensure that Aamir beats his own Dhoom:3 record. Continuing Disney UTV’s A-list roster is Anurag Basu’s Ranbir Kapoor starrer Jagga Jasoos, which hopefully won’t be the plagiarised mash up that was Barf-i.
Other potential winners include ABCD 2 3D, Remo D’Souza’s sequel to the Prabhu Dheva hit; Vishal Bhardwaj’s Hamlet adaptation Haider, starring Shahid Kapoor; Shashank Ghosh’s Khoobsurat remake with Sonam Kapoor vainly trying to fill Rekha’s shoes; Imtiaz Ali’s AR Rahman musical Highway; Abhishek Kapoor’s next after Kai Po Che, Fitoor, starring Aashiqui 2’s Aditya Roy Kapur; Nitin Kakkar’s festival darling Filmistaan; Akshay Akkineni’s remake of Tamil smash hit Pizza, in 3D; the inevitable Emraan Hashmi starrer, Kunal Deshmukh’s Shaatir; and the inescapable Chetan Bhagat adaptation 2 States, directed by Abhishek Varman starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt.
Disney UTV also has four Tamil films lined up – Linguswamy’s untitled Suriya starrer; Thiru’s Naan Sigappu Manithan, starring Vishal and Lakshmi Menon; Jhananathan’s Vijay Sethupathi and Arya starrer Purampokku; and Gaurav’s Vikram Prabhu starrer Sigaram Thodu. Over in Telugu, Koratala Siva’s Mahesh Babu starrer is also due.
“Disney UTV has produced some of the most trendsetting and cult movies of the past decade and we are confident that our upcoming releases will keep the same tradition alive.
