As the actor turns 29 today we trace her journey from the not so glamourous music videos to side roles in Dill Mill Gayye to the main lead in daily soaps
We loved Drashti Dhami in Geet Hui Sabse Payari and continue to do so in Madhubala EK Ishq Ek Junoon. But truth be told, the actor started her career with something very different. Drashti began in showbiz with a music video for Saiyaan dil mein aana re, where she was one of the four girls who danced. Her cute and cheerful face won her another Punjabi music video, Nachle soniye tu, where she was the solo female lead. The actor then did Bappi Lahiri’s Humko aaj kal hai intezar video remix, in which she tried to ape Madhuri Dixit’s moves. While she did not manage to get it exactly right, the effort was commendable. Drashti then did several advertisements until she finally bagged a role in Star One’s Dill Mill Gayye. The actor played the happy and bubbly character of Dr Muskaan. In spite of being appreciated and loved, the character was not retained for long.
Post the medical drama, Drashti got the biggest break she could at that stage – to play the lead in Geet… Hui Sabse Parayi. The actor played the heroine opposite telly Greek god Gurmeet Choudhary and the chemistry between them sparkled, making her a star overnight. People wished that the actors would start dating in the course of the daily soap, and rumours a-plenty suggested that they had. However, Gurmeet soon married his Ramayan co-star Debina Bonnerjee, while Drashti was linked with businessman Neeraj Khemka. The Geet lady soon became a household name with the soap and was missed when it ended.
In May 2012, Drashti bagged Nautanki Films’ big budget daily soap Madhubala Ek Ishq Ek Junoon. Paired opposite Vivian D’Sena, the actor’s career soared to new levels. Her name is now synonymous with Madhubala. Last year, she was invited to participate in the dance reality show Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 6 – paired with popular choreographer Salman Yusuf Khan, she won the trophy. As guest on the show, director Rohit Shetty offered her the female lead role in Singham 2 with Ajay Devgn as hero, but Drashti refused the offer, citing lack of time. While she harbours a dream of entering Bollywood some day, she currently prefers to focus only on the projects in hand, she says.
Currently Drashti is in Goa celebrating with beau Neeraj and close friends. Apparently this will be her last birthday as an unmarried woman. The actor intends to wed her long time boyfriend on February 22, 2014.
We wish Drashti all the best in her future endeavours and a very happy birthday!
