‘Ek Tha Tiger’ director Kabir Khan mourns the death of Captain Lakshmi Sahgal

The veteran soldier, grandmother of director Shaad Ali, passed away due to cardiac arrest

Though several prominent B-towners – with the notable exception of the prolific Amitabh Bachchan – stayed away from Twitter while expressing their sorrow over the death of Capt Lakshmi Sahgal of the Indian National Army, Kabir Khan was not one of them. The filmmaker shared his memories of the feisty freedom fighter on the social networking site.

Capt. Lakshmi, who led the Rani Jhansi regiment of the INA against the British and was a close confidante of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, succumbed to a cardiac arrest on July 23 at the age of 97. She was the grandmother of Saathiya and Bunty Aur Babli director Shaad Ali and the aunt of actor-dancer Mallika Sarabhai. For Kabir though, she was a woman with a strong spirit. He tweeted, “With the passing away of Lakshmi Sehgal… an era comes to an end… she was a part of the most exciting movement in Indian history.. INA. My first major documentary, The Forgotten Army was filmed with her. I drove with her from Singapore to India through Malaysia and Burma… It took us three months to complete the journey. She was 86 at that time. I have never seen such spirit in anybody even half her age…” May her soul rest in peace.
