Sridevi’s much-acclaimed film’s collections were just Rs 2.5 crore on opening…not as good as expected
Sridevi’s comeback film English Vinglish garnered rave reviews in India and abroad, with some critics going overboard and praising the film a lot more than it deserved, giving credit mainly to the actor’s stellar performance. Coupled with some good word of mouth reviews and positive buzz, the movie should’ve seen more footfalls than it actually got.
But according to trade reports, English Vinglish opened with Rs 2.5 crore at the box office on Friday, October 5. It got a mixed reaction from the audience, with some theatres going empty and some being housefull. Saturday and Sunday were better, with collections standing at Rs 4.4 crore and Rs 6.1 crore respectively. However, Super Cinema says the film gathered Rs 6.75 core on Sunday.
The good news is that Sridevi’s film crossed Rs 13 crore in one weekend. However, this Friday’s release – Rani Mukerji’s wakda comic caper Aiyyaa – might be a huge blow for English Vinglish’s hopes to leave the theatres with a decent earning. Keep watching this space for more on that story.
Sridevi has managed to impress filmmakers and critics alike with her performance, but definitely has not swayed the box office. Unfortunately for her, she has not really been the ‘hero’ of English Vinglish in terms of its collections, a la Vidya Balan for The Dirty Picture or Kahaani. Maybe next time, Sri?
