This beauty queen cheers for her film, Miss Lovely, which has been nominated in the Un Certain Regard category, at the prestigious festival

While many of our former beauty queens are still struggling to see their movies make waves at the Cannes Film Festival, Miss India Earth 2005, Nikarika Singh, who has was nowhere on the Indian film circuit, has walked away with all the attention this year.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has been the international face of India at Cannes for many years now, but she has always walked the red carpet to keep her brand endorsement commitments. The other beauty queen, Sushmita Sen’s B-town career didn’t take off the way it was expected to and she never made it to the red carpet of any of the prestigious film festivals. Priyanka Chopra is one of the biggest stars in B-town today, and her film, Don 2 was screened (it wasn’t nominated) at the Berlin Film Festival last year. Ms Chopra is yet to make her presence felt at Cannes though.

But there’s one former Miss India, who has managed to achieve what all these biggies never could. Miss India Earth, Niharika Singh’s film, Miss Lovely has been nominated in the Un Certain Regard category at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and the actor seems to be enjoying all the attention. Directed by Ashim Ahluwalia, the film dives into the underbelly of Mumbai and explores the breeding grounds of C-grade cinema. The movie has managed to create a fair amount of buzz at Cannes, bringing its director and cast into the limelight.

Niharika glowed in a milky-white gown as she posed at the photocall, alongside the rest of the team – Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Anil George, Niharika Singh and director Ashim Ahluwalia. We especially loved the subtle style statement she made by donning silver accessories – watch, ring and clutch.

We’ll have to wait to find out whether this international success will translate into projects and popularity back home for this former beauty queen.
