From killer babe to comedy queen – can Mahie do it?

The Dev D debutant might be well-known for her edgy roles, but after Not a Love Story she too, like most Bollywood heroines, wants to dance around trees and make people laugh

Mahie Gill was recently seen in Ram Gopal Varma’s controversial flick Not a Love Story and now she is gearing for Sahib Biwi Aur Gangster, which is once again her kinda offbeat film. The Dev D debutant is content with her career progress, but admits to craving some light-heart stuff onscreen. “People call and say, ‘Mahie, there is a female protagonist role and there is scope for performance’, so I get those kinds of films,” says the theatre-trained actor, who feels blessed to get such work. However, at the same time Mahie says, “I would love to do an out and out commercial film, but someone has to offer to me one. I don’t want to stand in one corner and do nothing. At least film mein ek do scenes ho jo mere hone chahiye (I should have at least a couple of powerful scenes).” When asked to elaborate on her idea of commercial roles, she is happy to explain, “The one thing that I’d like to do is comedy, because I have not tried till now. And I think it is the most difficult. Also, I have grown up watching Yash Chopra films, so I would also like to wear a chiffon sari and run around trees. And do some dancing – I am a trained Kathakali dancer.” While that style may not be the stuff of YRF films, wethinks maybe Mahie should be given a chance to work on a change of her image now!
