One of the very first bonafide star choreographers of Hindi cinema turns 64 today. We wish her a very happy birthday!
Born on November 22, 1948, as Nirmala Nagpal, Saroj always nurtured a wish to become the leading choreographer of the Hindi film industry, and she did it! She made a mark with Subhash Ghai’s Jackie Shroff-Meenakshi Sheshadri-starrer Hero and there has been no looking back for her since. The Saroj Khan-Madhuri Dixit combo worked wonders and gave Bollywood the most memorable dance numbers ever seen. From Hero to Mr India and Chandni to Karan Johar’s Agneepath, Saroj Khan’s conceptualised dance numbers ensured that the leading ladies were immortalised on the big screen.
Saroj Khan admitted in an interview that it was Ek do teen from Tezaab that actually changed the game for her, though she was already at the peak of her career. The choreographer will always be remembered for her exemplary work in Tezaab, Chaalbaaz, Sailaab, Beta, Khalnayak, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Devdas, Lagaan, Guru and Jab We Met, among others. She also runs a popular dance academy that helps many Bollywood aspirants make their way on to the big screen.
She also judges various dance reality shows on television and mentors participants. Reportedly, she’ll be seen shaking her kamariya on celluloid for the first time in Remo D’Souza’s Any Body Can Dance.
With 275 films to her credit and more than a handful of popular and National awards, Saroj Khan is a legend. As she turns 64, we wish her all the best and hope that she keeps making our hearts go Dhak dhak with her jhatkaas and matkaas.
