The veteran beauty turns 70 today
We wonder if today’s generation knows that the ‘Sadhana cut’, meaning fringes, was made famous in India by one of Hindi cinema’s most beautiful actors. Her name is Sadhana and she celebrates her birthday today. Known for her lovely eyes, the sparkling beauty was born in Sindh in Pakistan in 1941. Her family migrated to India after Partition. Sadhana was ‘discovered’ in a college play by some producers when she was just 15. After doing bit roles in a few films like Sindhi film Abana (1958) and Raj Kapoor’s Shree 420 (1955), she debuted as a female lead in Love in Simla (1960) opposite Joy Mukherjee. She went on to star in films with popular music like Mere Mehboob (1963), Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Mera Saaya (1965) and Anita (1968) among others. She was nominated for a Filmfare Award for Waqt (1965). She did quite a few films with Raj Khosla, and a film each with Dev Anand and Guru Dutt, both incomplete. She was married to RK Nayyar, her first director, for 30 years before he passed away. Sadhana is the aunt of actors Kareena Kapoor and Karisma Kapur, being the first cousin of their mom, actor Babita. If you have liked the chudidar and kameez combination worn by Kareena, Karisma or their mom, remember that it was first made famous by Sadhana! Wish her happy birthday in the box below.
