How will Delhi Belly’s ‘Bhaag DK Bose’ sound in Cantonese?

The film is being dubbed in the local language for the Chinese market

Even as Aamir Khan is changing the meaning of reality shows in India with Satyamev Jayate, his production Delhi Belly is making inroads into China. The Imran Khan-Kunal Roy Kapur-Vir Das-starrer will be released in Hong Kong on May 10. Instead of providing subtitles, the powers-that-be have decided to dub the film in Cantonese for the Chinese cinegoers.

Delhi Belly is not the first Indian film to go to China. In the past few years, My Name Is Khan and 3 Idiots have been released in Hongkong, while Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was Hrithik Roshan’s first movie to tap this market. However, unlike the other films, DB’s genre is not typically Bollywood. It also has several choice abuses that are difficult to translate from Hindi to English, leave alone from Hindi to Cantonese. Can you imagine how Bhaag DK Bose will sound when translated? Or even Jaa chudail? Other than the songs, the film’s outrageous dialogues contributed greatly to its unique flavour. We wonder if the fun will get lost in translation. DB is Imran’s first movie to go to China and we are sure he is hoping it won’t be his last.
