In Memoriam: Cinema greats we loved and lost

On our first anniversary, we take a moment for a sad trip down memory lane so we can remember those talented souls who passed away

Bollywood movies can hardly be called realistic, yet all of them will have a sad moment following a happy one. Sorrow, tears and grief are as essential – if not more – to Bollywood movies as song and dance. And why not? For all their success and fame, the members of the film fraternity too have experienced these emotions. In the last one year alone, our regional and Hindi film industries have lost close to 50 loved ones. Every time we heard that one more talented soul departed this world, we wished they could now rest in peace.Today, as we look back, we choose to celebrate their lives.

Dev Anand (September 26, 1923 – December 3, 2011) and Shammi Kapoor (October 21, 1931-August 14, 2011) were two mega stars who lived their lives to the fullest. Both of them suffered from several ailments but they never let that intrude into their zest for life. Shammi worked in Rockstar even though he was on dialysis and Dev had started planning his next film while undergoing treatment in London. Satyadev Dubey (1936 – December 26, 2011) was another irrepressible human being, constantly involved in theatre and film activities. Shandar Amrohi (1943 – August 21, 2011) had to deal with controversies regarding his private life in the public eye, but he did it with aplomb. The very young television actor Rubina Shergill and the much more senior Rasika Joshi worked till the last day of their lives.

Several other actors went a different route. Achala Sachdev (May 3, 1920 – April 30, 2012) and Kalpana Mohan (July 18, 1946 – January 4, 2012) were more reclusive and chose a life far away from the arclights. Malayalam actor Jose Prakash (April 14, 1925 – March 24, 2012) and Bollywood actor Joy Mukherjee (February 24, 1939 – March 9, 2012) brought style to cinema, but decided to retire young instead of desperately stretching out their fame. This was true of the legends from behind the camera too. Lyricist Shahryar (1936 – February 13, 2012) became an academician, while music directors Ravi ( March 3, 1926 – March 7, 2012) and Anthony Gonsalves (1927 – January 18, 2012), and filmmaker OP Dutta (1922 – February 9, 2012) retired without any fuss. Raj Kanwar (1961 – February 3, 2012), Mani Kaul (December 25, 1944 – July 6, 2011), Jagmohan Mundhra (October 29, 1948 – September 4, 2011) and Ashish Lakhia ( 1962 – March 11, 2011) enriched Hindi cinema through their unique viewpoints. The newer generation could learn a thing or two not only about cinema, but about life in general from these veterans.

Surinder Kapoor ( December 23, 1925 – September 14, 2011) and his former daughter-in-law Mona Kapoor (February 3, 1964 – March 25, 2012) truly believed that the industry was a fraternity. Whenever anyone was in need or going through a rough patch, they would be there for them. No wonder then that they were well-loved by B-towners.

Bollywood bid a final goodbye to several other members of the fraternity between May 2011 and May 2012. They will forever remain in the hearts of their fans through their talent and their contribution to Indian cinema.
