Is Dibakar Banerjee courting trouble with ‘Shanghai’?

Whenever politics has been used as a subject in a movie, it has invited trouble for the makers. But sometimes the controversy works for the film. Will it work for this one?

If the backlash received by Prakash Jha’s Aarakshan is anything to go by, filmmaker Dibakar Banerjee could land himself in a soup, thanks to the genre of his next film, Shanghai. A political thriller is exciting, no doubt, but if the film even remotely irks the politicos, it spells doom for the film and its makers. We heard that Banerjee’s next film revolves around land-grabbing and the subsequent skewed redevelopment controversy.

Shanghai is the director’s most ambitious film till date and stars Abhay Deol and Emraan Hashmi in the lead. Abhay will be seen playing a south Indian character called Krishnan, while Emraan is playing a street hustler called Jogi Parmar. Both actors haven’t played edgy parts like these in their career and it is good to see them take a chance with a hatke film. The film also stars Bengali superstar Prosenjit and actor Kalki Koechlin and the buzz is that both have strong roles. The question that remains is whether there will be political arm-twisting and mud-slinging. More importantly, will Shanghai even get a proper release? The makers of Aarakshan had to face a lot of trouble in getting their film released. Also, Shanghai doesn’t have the clout which another controversial film, Karan Johar’s My Name Is Khan, had.
