After having worked with two big actors, the director of Dor quietly made his kind of film with Ayesha Takia and Rannvijay Singh
Nagesh Kukunoor recently announced the completion of his new film – called Mod – with his rakhi sister, actor Ayesha Takia, and VJ-actor Rannvijay Singh. He quietly took off to Ooty with his cast and crew and filmed it. No one got a whiff of the movie till the shoot was over. The reason for the hush-hush, the director reveals, was that “I have always stayed away from attention while making a film. But that got disrupted during my last few films, as I was working with big stars like Akshay Kumar and John Abraham, who created media attention. I decided to go back to my roots and do this film (Mod) the way I used to. Now I hope people like this one.” Does that mean Nagesh has sworn off working with big stars? Maybe, yes. Wethinks it is a wise decision. Despite producing some of the best films we have seen, like Dor and Iqbal, the last few years have been tough for the chemical engineer-turned-filmmaker. His Aashayein starring John never got released and Akshay and he had a lot of trouble during the making of Tasveer. Nagesh is one of those few directors whose content always was king. Unlike his contemporaries, he never relied on star power; but things changed during the corporate boom in the film industry. Back then, producers were willing to pay huge amounts to get a leading actor or director into a project. But it came with a price, which Nagesh paid in two disasters. Now it’s time for him to so his own thing in his own way, it seems!
