The only film that the Mausam star recently signed – the Hindi remake of the Tamil blockbuster Vettai – seemed likely to start immediately, but may not happen due to technical glitches
It’s been over six months since Mausam released and bombed at the box-office, but the film’s leading man Shahid Kapoor still hasn’t green signaled a single new project. Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani that has been making news was signed by Sasha whilst he was shooting for his father Pankaj Kapur’s film. There has been no dearth of rumours about the films the dancing star is supposed to do, though. If you remember, Shahid is supposed to have signed on to do the Hindi remake of Tom Cruise’s Knight And Day, as well as a Yash Raj film to be directed by Maneesh Sharma. But that’s all we know about the biggies! Vishal Bharadwaj, the filmmaker who changed people’s perception of Shahid’s acting skills with Kaminey, approached his favourite actor for Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola, but he turned it down.
Then we heard that the 30-year-old actor had agreed to do the Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster Vettai. Everyone was looking forward to this UTV-Dharma co-production for various reasons. Finally Shahid would get to work on his first Hindi remake of a South blockbuster which, like it or not, is a big deal in the industry. The film would also be his first under the prestigious Dharma Productions banner. But it seems Shahid’s happiness at this collaboration was destined to be short lived.
It has nothing to do with Shahid being temperamental or choosy, not this time. The film is very male-centric and so none of the leading female stars are willing to be part of it, we hear. First Sonakshi Sinha and then Asin Thottumkal were approached for the part of Shahid’s lady love in the remake, but they both turned it down. While we are glad the young women didn’t want to play an inconsequential part, it’s not the first time they were offered such insignificant roles. Has Sonakshi forgotten Dabangg and Asin, Ready and Housefull 2?
Coming back to Vettai – since Karan Johar is tied up with his own projects, he has backed out of being associated with the remake, thus causing Shahid’s dream of working with the big banner to fall through. The latest development is that Shahid isn’t pleased with the Hindi script of the Tamil blockbuster and so Vettai remake plans, for now, are covered by a hazy mist. Hopefully this is just a passing phase and nothing too rough and rocky will hamper the course of SK’s career!
