Is Sonakshi Sinha stuck in the ‘desi’ mould?

The actor was always rather well rounded, perfectly suited to characters from the desi side of life, but is she stuck in that rut? Will she ever be able to play the urban mini-skirted babe?

Sonakshi Sinha is in danger of being typecast as the ‘behenji’ of Bollywood if she doesn’t put her mind to treadmill-way of life! We are not saying that she should go against her natural build and be the new ‘size zero’ girl by starving herself…or worse. No. But the latest buzz is that filmmakers are not considering her seriously for roles where she has to look western, because her figure just cannot carry those clothes. In her new period film opposite Ranveer Singh – just announced as being called Lootera – Sonakshi will don saris and sport a retro look. She wore a gorgeously ’50s sari at the launch of the film and looked elegant but…err…kinda stout. In real life, we do appreciate Sona’s style and dressing sense, be it Indian or western wear, since she does have a fashion design background and has done some modelling. But onscreen, we want to see her in more from the global look book. Akshay Kumar, who is Sonakshi’s co-star in Joker, calls her “the most desi girl in the industry”. Was that just because she plays a village belle in Joker (again, after Dabangg)? Or maybe because Akki was promoting his next, Desi Boyz?Whatever the case, Sonakshi doesn’t seem to mind playing the truly trad-gal role. At the Lootera launch she said, “As an actor, I am doing a lot of other commercial films too. The main reason for me to do this film was that I had tears in my eyes after I heard the script. It is going to be my most challenging role ever. As an actor you need to keep doing different things….” We really don’t see the difference here, but we will let it be…for now. Of course, to keep the record straight, Sona did tell us that she has experimented with her look in Joker, and does don western wear as well. “But why not (wear Indian)? I am an Indian and I am a Hindi film heroine. All the roles that are coming way are Indian! I am absolutely okay with people seeing me as an Indian heroine,” she said. Wethinks that she knows full well that her luscious curves just will not work in those clingy minis and strappy camis that other girls her age are slinking about in. But tell us, which avatar of Sonakshi do you want to see most?
