The director of Dev.D and the producer of Mausam are taking potshots at each other post the latter’s comments about India’s presence at the recently held Cannes International Film Festival
Anurag Kashyap’s Gangs Of Wasseypur, his protégé Vasan Bala’s Peddlers and Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely were shown at the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival this year. It was a moment of glory for Indian cinema, because so far our presence at Cannes was limited to the red carpet, on which B-town’s brand-endorsing celebs like Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor posed for shutterbugs. But this year was different, as the filmmakers and their bunch of enthusiastic actors got rave reviews for their films… standing ovations, the works!
So we were surprised when we read about producer Sheetal Talwar’s outburst. “Indian cinema is a f***ing joke at Cannes.” Talwar went on to say that NFDC was wasting money at the fest. The rant concluded with: “Barring a stray Satyajit Ray or Mira Nair, the world is not interested in our cinema.” This article angered all the filmmakers at Cannes trying to find new markets for their works. Anurag Kashyap, who has always been very vocal about his opinions, was in no mood to spare the Mausam producer.
In a reply to one of his followers on Twitter Kashyap said, “NFDC is actually making a difference here and Sheetal Talwar is who? the con job who doesn’t pay people, bullies writers.” He tweeted, “So the latest info i have is Mr. Subhash K Jha was on the Religare board, which is floated by Sheetal Talwar.. Fraud pe Fraud. And he resigned two years back from it.” While we don’t know why the filmmakers are washing their dirty linen in public, we just hope sanity prevails and they get back to making films.
