Jab Tak Hai Jaan song Challa inspired from Eagle-Eye Cherry’s Save tonight?

The AR Rahman song from Shahrukh Khan’s next is uncannily similar to the popular Swedish musician’s popular number

AR Rahman is one of the most loved and revered Indian music composers in the world. And he is known for his unique compositions and brilliant technique. But this time around it looks like he has decided to take inspiration from the 1997 song Save tonight from the album Desireless, by Eagle Eye Cherry. The song Challa from Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hai Jaan starring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma has uncanny similarities to Save tonight.

The alternative rock number is Swedish musician Eagle-Eye Cherry’s most popular song and is still played in pubs all across India and elsewhere in the world. So it’s not that difficult to discover how Challa sounds a lot like it.

The opening guitar piece is exactly the same as Save tonight, and after that it follows the same acoustic rhythm throughout. We have no doubt that Rabbi has done a good job of bringing a very Indian folk feel to Challa, but we are slightly disappointed with Rahman. Come on Sir, we expect only quintessentially original Rahman music from you!

Check out the video below to see how similar the two songs are…

Thanks for pointing it out. I do not care if it is copied or inspired. But if Rahman is doing it (this time people have noticed, in the past no body found resemblance with native African folk songs and tunes ), then it is definitely issue. As long it is enjoyable, have fun.

You guys seriously need something more important to write about. Tempo and general rhythm templates are similar, but that’s it….chord progressions are not the same and melody is COMPLETELY different. ARR is a legend…no stupid article like this will even make a small dent in his legacy as one of the world’s leading composers. It’s like throwing a pebble in an ocean hoping to create a huge wave. Sorry, but your pebble drowned.

The writer seems to be suffering from a dual syndrome – being ‘tone deaf’ as well as ‘stone deaf’. Apart from the acoustic pattern (which is incidental) there is absoutely no similairity between the two numbers..

If u really wanna find something…find the similarity between notes. Just because an acoustic guitar and a drum with a rhytm is used doesnt mean its an inspiration. Challa is completely different from this song . A.R.Rahman is a great musician.try and show some respect :))

I agree with Ash…both songs have the guitar and drums as the main instruments but the structure of the notes are completely different. “challa” has a little bit higher notes and slower pace, with different drums not just a drum set. You can hear a more deeper drum sound in Challa.

Really? You guys want to get some hits on your website by piggy backing on JTHJ’s popularity by publishing a rubish article. The songs sound nothing similar. It doesn’t mean if the song has a guitar phase it is copied. The writer is completely naive. We need to have a better standard of journalism.
