JOKER box office: Is the film Akshay Kumar’s biggest letdown?

Shirish Kunder’s ‘out of this world family entertainer’ failed to pull in majority of the Khiladi Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha fans on the opening weekend

Farah Khan’s home production, Joker has been in the news for all the wrong reasons. The box office collections on the opening weekend point out that all the negative buzz about Shirish Kunder’s ambitious alien flick was right after all. Perhaps the first film in the history of cinema that was converted from 3D to 2D, Joker has not only been panned by the critics, even loyal Akshay Kumar fans felt terribly let down.

If the reported BO figures are anything to go by, Joker didn’t even make as much money as small budget, story oriented films like Vicky Donor. On the opening Friday, Kunder’s pack of jokers made approximately Rs 4.75 crores. The second day (Saturday) also registered Rs 4.75 crores. The collection on Sunday was comparatively better – the early estimates say that it is around Rs 5.50 crores. That too after the lead pair, Akshay-Sonakshi having delivered one of the biggest hits of the year, Rowdy Rathore.

The total domestic collections of Joker reportedly stand at Rs 15 crores; add to that the total overseas collections of Rs 0.50 crore and you are left with a dismal total worldwide collection of Rs 15.50 crore. This is not even half of what Salman Khan’s Eid special, Ek Tha Tiger made on its opening day. It could be unfair to compare the two, but going by the hype and hoopla surrounding Joker, we felt it just might get to the half way mark of Tiger’s first weekend collections.

It is also one of Akshay Kumar’s lowest openings, and it comes as a surprise especially since Joker released right after the successful Rowdy Rathore. Even Blue, his underwater adventure flick with Sanjay Dutt and Zayed Khan got an opening of about Rs 6cr. Kambakht Ishq, one of Akshay’s most expensive and biggest duds till date boasted of an opening day collection that exceeded Rs. 10cr. In comparison the collection of Kunder’s seems paltry. This might cause a dent in Akki’s brand value, that he had salvaged post Housefull 2 and RR.

Akshay might now be hoping that his forthcoming release OMG! Oh My God manages to salvage his box office standing.
