The king of romance, opulence and visual spectacle, the creator of Shahrukh Khan as the eternal lover looks all set to make a sugary rom-com based on the equally mushy novel by the author of One Night @ the Call Centre
Come 2012 and Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions will dish out its most eagerly awaited films, including Agneepath , Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu and Student Of The Year. Recently it also announced Ayan Mukherjee’s Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani starring Ranbir Kapoor and ex-flame Deepika Padukone. If that’s not too hot to handle, a little birdie tells us that the Koffee With Karan host is also adapting the much acclaimed novel 2 States by Chetan Bhagat and plans to spin it into a mega-budget film.
Apparently, the film was supposed to be directed by Vishal Bhardwaj and Shahrukh Khan was pencilled in to portray the lead character. But even before the film was announced, two major replacements have been declared. Karan replaces Vishal as the director of the film and Ranbir Kapoor will be seen in the lead instead of Shahrukh. 2 States is a love story between a Punjabi boy and a Tamil girl, based loosely on Bhagat’s own life. It struck a chord with young readers and can make for perfect filmy fodder. But there is a slight hitch. Bhagat, who seems to write every novel with the intention of having it made into a film – needs to be a little more careful this time around. Remember the furore that was created when the author claimed that director Rajkumar Hirani and actor Aamir Khan had not given him enough credit for their film 3 Idiots, which was inspired from the Bhagat’s Five Point Someone? Turns out he had been paid as promised, but wanted to hog a little of the limelight, too. Having said that, we believe that Bhagat’s colourful script (2 States) is in safe hands, since Karan is generally considered to be a man with a clean reputation and is known for portraying his stories dramatically on celluloid. Going by this deadly combo of author-director, we know that every frame of this film will be soaked in glamour, razzmatazz and romance!
