Anil Kapoor, the producer of Sonam Kapoor-Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Veere Di Wedding, has filed a complaint against upcoming Jimmy Sheirgill starrer Veerey Ki Wedding. No points for guessing, the reason for the complaint is the similarity in their respective movie titles. While Veere Di Wedding was announced in January 2016 but couldn’t start the shoot due to Kareena Kapoor Khan’s pregnancy and are now planning to commence the shoot in May 2017, on the other hand, Jimmy Shergill starrer has already completed 50 percent of his film’s shoot.
According to a report in Mid-Day, Anil Kapoor has written a letter to Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association (IMPAA), and has urged them for intervention. Veerey Ki Wedding director Ashu Trikha says they had acquired a copyright and trademark for the title, apart from registering it with their association, Indian Film and TV Producers Council. Bollywood film producers are associated with different trade associations, all of which are helmed by the Film Makers Combine, which takes the final decision. He told mid-day, “The association suggests that a trademark supersedes any other registration. Legally, we have supported our title with everything.”
He further states that the shooting of the songs including the title track is complete. Following a packed schedule next week, 80 per cent of the film will be ready. Co-producer Chandan Bakshi says that though IMPAA had initially asked them to change the title, they gave the team a green signal after learning of the trademark and that a major part of the film had been shot. A senior member of IMPAA told the tabloid, “Anil will have to choose a new title since shooting is yet to commence for his film. That’s the only way out.”
