After biopics, it looks like Bollywood filmmakers have found a new passion: gangster films
With both Vishal Bhardwaj and Sanjay Leela Bhansali planning gangster films with a female lead, we just have to wonder who they will cast in these roles. Will Vishal’s repeat his Kaminey heroine Priyanka Chopra? Or is SLB likely to choose his Ram Leela leading lady Deepika Padukone again? Or will the latest Dhoom:3 girl Katrina Kaif be in focus with either director?
Bhardwaj and Bhansali are reportedly all set to direct films on two different female gangsters, both based on the same source material. Apparently some years ago Vishal had talked to Bhansali about a script about reincarnation that he wanted the latter to direct. That film never happened. But now both distinguished filmmakers’ destinies have become joined in a strange way. Each has secured filmmaking rights to chapters from S Hussain Zaidi’s bestseller Mafia Queens of Mumbai, the docu-story about women gang leaders in the city.
While Bhardwaj will soon be making a film based on Zaidi’s account of Ashraf Khan alias Sapna, the woman whose only mission in life was to eliminate her husband’s killer, Dawood Ibrahim, Bhansali plans to direct a film based on the life and crimes of Gangubai Kothewali, the dreaded female crimelord known as the ‘Madame of Kamathipura’. Interestingly, both productions are expected to go on the floors at the same time next year. Meanwhile, filmmaker Shashi Ranjan is already halfway through his biopic on another female gangster, this one called Archana Sharma, with Mahima Chowdhary in the lead. While Rajan has managed to find his leading lady and has started work already, we had to wonder who would play Vishal-SLB’s bad ladies. Looks like the race for the Best Gangster, Female has just begun!
