Big B shines effortlessly in the debut of KBC 6, which starts with a bang and is all that you were looking for, and more!
Amitabh Bachchan takes over the screen and effortlessly launches into the new season of Kaun Banega Corepati season 6 like it was only yesterday when he first dominated the tube back in 2000, with KBC 1.
KBC 6 clearly succeeds. Before this the game show desperately tried to reinvent itself and used every trick in the book. It changed wardrobes, style, the way the game is played; introduced new catch phrases like ‘Freeze’ and even its esteemed host! But it struggled to thrive, evident by low TRP’s, and the gimmicks were quite visible to the public, jo sab jaanti hai, bhai!
But with season 6 there have been some critical changes, namely two which one cannot ignore. The first is the choice of contestants. The KBC production team has really scouted the country to get authentic people to take part. They seem very real and one cannot fail to notice the parallels between the contestants and the chaiwala from Slumdog Millionaire! There is a contestant from Rajasthan; all of 24 years old. The guy quit his job after watching 3 Idiots, has a wife who’s abandoned him after seeing the cramped condition he lives in. But it’s his time now as he is on the hot seat, ready to take on the world!
The second one, partly inspired by Aamir Khan’s Satyamev Jayate and by a brand of Anna Hazare’s chest thumping, in your face patriotism which, even if executed cheaply, makes the audience sit up and take notice. This season is a safe, non-toxic mix of it.
Amitabh Bachchan is more natural than he’s ever been, and he chats up the contestants quite coolly. At 70, Amitabh even breaks into a little Bhangra gig to please a contestant! He is the perfect host. All in all, it is a successful season, but with some long and tedious breaks!
