The veteran filmmaker is planning to take his classic comic tale forward
We are living in the times of sequels and remakes. That is the reason why we weren’t surprised when we heard that veteran filmmaker Kundan Shah is planning to make a sequel of his cult comedy, the Naseeruddin Shah-Ravi Baswani starrer, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro. Though it didn’t become a commercial success when it released in 1983, over the years it has emerged as one of the funniest films to have come out of Bollywood. JBDY was about two rookie photographers (Shah and Baswani) who end up being witnesses to a murder and how they try to bring the guilty (Pankaj Kapur) to book.
News about the sequel of JBDY is that Naseer will be a part of the film and the veteran filmmaker is on the lookout for a replacement of Baswani who recently passed away. While some purists are of the opinion that such cult classics should be left alone, there are many fans out there who wish to see what more the director could come up with. We excitedly spoke to the director to find out if the sequel is on the anvil. He said, “I have written the sequel but nothing has been finalised. Journalists ask me thousand questions and make mountain of a mole. I personally do not find the idea of remakes and sequels very exciting. But I am surprised that Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro is being re-released. The sequel of JBDY that I have written is a very political one and is a comedy. For now I really don’t know if the sequel will be made.”
JBDY was Shah’s debut film as director and it remains his best and most loved work. It would be interesting to see how he takes the story forward and who replaces funny man Baswani if at all the sequel is made. Let’s hope Shah changes his mind, and decides to give the sequel a shot!
