Lata Mangeshkar-Mohammed Rafi controversy heats up!

The veteran singer’s revelations about Rafi snowball into a messy tangle as the late singer’s son Shahid Rafi denies Lata’s claim and calls her story ‘untrue’

It seemed as if the decades-old Lata Mangeshkar vs Mohammed Rafi controversy was laid to rest after Lata revealed details about how the two stalwarts had made up after their infamous fight.

In a recent interview Lata revealed how she got into a spat with Rafi during a meeting where the two decided they wouldn’t sing with each other again. According to the lady, Rafi later sent her a written note apologising for his behavior and asked to patch up with her.

However, Rafi’s son Shahid Rafi spoke to the press recently and refuted Lata’s allegations. He claimed that his father never apologised to songstress, insisting that it was Lata who had asked composer Jaikishan to intervene between them, as she was insecure about losing out on singing duets with Rafi since the pair was popular and delivered some of the most memorable songs ever heard.

Shahid also asked Lata to show him the letter that she claimed his father wrote to her, and went on to say that the legendary singer should stop maligning Rafi as he is no longer in this world to defend himself. Well, it sure seems like Ms Mangeshkar’s attempts to lay the feud to rest have failed, and a new controversy is in the making. Shahid plans to hold a press conference today to clarify further. we love both the legendary singers. So, please avoid to publish now if there were any controversy between them.

Strange that Lataji should raise such controversy at this point of time. Both Rafi and Lataji were great singers during their heyday and have given us many memorable duets like ‘Palkonke peeche se kya tumne keh dala’ ( Talash, 1969), ‘Mujhe preet nagariya jana hai’ (Ek Nazar, 1951), ‘Chalenge teer ( Kohinoor), ‘Dheere dheere chal chand gagan mein’ (Love Marriage) and others. She cannot underrate Rafi sahab now. If such letter is there she should have preserved it before talking like that.

Yes Lataji should not have disclosed that Rafi Saab had sent a letter of apology, since the latter soul had died long back. There was no need of this controversy at the fag end of her life.
